Family Visits

“The excitement of learning separates youth from old age. As long as you’re learning you’re not old.”
~ Nobel Prize-winning physicist Rosalyn S. Yalow

The joy of learning can last a lifetime! People of all ages learn best when they’re actively engaged, and children are most likely to embrace education as a lifelong process if they see the grownups around them learning, too. At the Great Lakes Children’s Museum, we nurture multi-generational education by providing a hands-on, interactive, informal environment that will invite curiosity, allow exploration, encourage participation, and celebrate the child-like wonder in all of us.

Families are strengthened by shared experiences, especially activities that are fun! The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services lists “spend time together” and “have fun as a family” as important qualities of strong families.

North Dakota State University’s report “Keys to Enhancing Brain Development in Young Children” concludes: “A child’s developing mind is nurtured by loving interactions, a secure and predictable environment and hands-on experiences that invite exploration and learning.”

The Great Lakes Children’s Museum is a wonderful all-season destination for families, conveniently located less than 2 miles from downtown Traverse City, with plenty of free parking, captivating exhibits and activities, special programs, and nearby parks and child-friendly eateries.

The Museum is located on the campus of the Discovery Center ~ Great Lakes, a collaborative educational facility that offers displays of historic boats, watershed ecology, and more.

Come pilot a Freighter, become a raindrop in the Water Cycle, make a weather report in the Weather Station, engineer the aqueducts in the Water Table, dress up in the Lighthouse Keeper’s Quarters, try some arts and crafts, explore Toddler Beach, and more … all at the Great Lakes Children’s Museum!
